"I Will Contend with Him that Contendeth with Thee"

Sometimes we all have moments when the light really goes on. Such a rare and beautiful moment occurred the other day with my children. I told Ellie and K.J. that I'd been pondering their occasional conflict with our neighbor who isn't always nice to kids.

I asked them, "If someone mistreats you, who are s/he really rejecting?"

They were quiet for a moment and then their eyes lit up. K.J. said, "The Savior!"

I said, "That's right. And if we then respond to that unkindness with apathy or unkindness, who are we really doing it to?"

"The Savior...," they said thoughtfully, with new amazement and understanding.

I explained that a lot of times we justify our actions based on others but it is always the Lord to whom we are accountable. He knows our hearts and, if we allow, will guide our actions. I said that it is our challenge to turn the injustices over to the Lord, for He has promised to fight against those who persecute us. (Isaiah 49:25--"I will contend with him that contendeth with thee and I will save thy children." I love that!)

I then asked them WHY the Lord has asked us to be kind to those that mistreat us. Is it so they will change?

"No," they answered wisely. "It's for us."

"Yep, it's our hearts that we must work to keep soft and kind and good. As you know, keeping our hearts soft becomes extra challenging when others are misgiving in their love for us. Yet, as we are kind, it does something to us and keeps us from entering the war engaged against us."

It was beautiful to see their hearts soften. Ellie made our neighbor cookies and took them to her. (It's not the first time and I explained to Ellie that it probably wouldn't change her. Ellie's response was so full of understanding: "I know. But I feel all better inside now.")
